    urinary dysfunction. Symptoms may include dark, turbid, scanty , difficult, and painful urination, e.g., symptoms of urinary tract infection. In severe

    
    cases there may be urinary retention and lower abdominal pain. Modern sources tell us that this formula may be used for urinary and

    
    genital disorders including urinary tract infection, cystitis, prostatitis, pelvic inflammation and other problems described as dampness and heat.

    
    Actions of the main herbs: Dianthes, Polygonum aviculare, talc and Plantago clear damp-heat by promoting urination and assist in unblocking the painful

    
    urinary dysfunction.  Juncus guides heat downward. Rhubarb drains heat through the stool. Licorice harmonizes the other ingredients and relieves

    
    the abdominal discomfort. Gardenia drains heat through the urine. Desmodium promotes urination, unblocks painful urinary dysfunction and expels stones.

    
    It is often used with Polygoni Avicularis for hot painful urinary dysfunction.

    
    Note: Desmondium is also known as Herba Jinqiancao or lysimachia
