DIY Bulk Chinese Herbs

The ability to make your own recipes or craft your own formulas adds a new dimension to using herbs. The herbs listed in this section are commonly used bulk herbs and powders. They can easily be made into tea by following standard formulas or by experimenting on your own. Along with each herb's description we have listed a few other herbs that can be used in combination with it. You can use our information as a starting point, but we suggest you seek out more detailed information by reading some of the books we carry.

Traditional Chinese medicine divides herbs into 20 groups. Most of the herbs listed here belong to the Tonic Herbs category. Tonic herbs are subdivided into four categories: the Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang tonics depending upon their major function in tonification. Herbalists from the Taoist tradition also consider Qi Regulating and Blood Circulating herbs as tonic herbs, albeit minor tonics. We list minor tonic herbs and herbs with other uses under the subheading Miscellaneous Herbs.

You can browse this section alphabetically or click on a heading below to browse by category of herbs.

Qi Tonifying Herbs
Qi tonics mainly treat fatigue and weakness related symptoms. They also boost the immune system and increase energy. These herbs are generally sweet and rich in nature.
Blood Tonifying Herbs
Blood tonics nourish the blood and are used for patterns of Blood deficiency. Most of these herbs are good for women but men also need them too! Blood tonics help moderate and balance formulas and are a very important category of Chinese herbs.
Yin Tonifying Herbs
Yin Tonifying Herbs tonify the Yin of the Lungs, Stomach, Liver or Kidneys. They also nourish the essential fluids of the body. The Chinese consider Yin Tonics one of the premier groups of Chinese herbs. Many can be cooked as food.
Yang Tonifying Herbs
Yang Tonifying herbs primarily tonify Kidney Yang. This group of herbs is often used for increasing sexual energy but because they are very warming it is important to balance them carefully in a formula.
Miscellaneous Bulk Herbs
Miscellaneous Herbs contains Qi Regulating, Blood Circulating, and herbs with other uses. These herbs are often used with herbs of the other categories to complete and balance your formula
