Bulk Chinese Herbs

The ability to make your own recipes or create your own formulas adds a new dimension to using herbs. The herbs listed in this section are commonly used bulk herbs and powders. They can be safely made into tea by following standard formulas or by experimenting on your own. Along with each herb's description we have listed a few other herbs that can be used in combination with it. You can use our information as a starting point, but we suggest you seek out more precise information by reading some of the books we carry.

Traditional Chinese medicine divides herbs into 20 groups. Most of the herbs listed here belong to the Tonic Herbs category. Tonic herbs are subdivided into four categories: the Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang tonics depending upon their major function in tonification. Herbalists from the Taoist tradition also consider Qi Regulating and Blood Circulating herbs as tonic herbs, albeit minor tonics. We list minor tonic herbs and herbs with other uses under the subheading Miscellaneous Herbs.
